What Should I Do After Storm Damage?
If it is safe to do so:
Document the property.
Take photos and video of visible damage before making permanent repairs.
Prevent additional damage.
Reasonable temporary repairs may help protect the property from further loss.
Keep receipts and document the property before and after repairs.
Review your insurance policy.
Coverage, deductibles, exclusions, and reporting requirements vary by policy.
Keep claim records.
Save emails, estimates, photos, inspection reports, receipts, and correspondence with your insurance carrier.
Pay attention to the insurance company's estimate.
An insurer's initial assessment may not necessarily reflect the full scope or cost of the damage.
Is Your Insurance Claim Denied, Delayed, or Underpaid?
Storm damage claims can become complicated when there is disagreement about:
-
What caused the damage
-
Whether the damage is covered
-
The extent of the damage
-
The cost of repairs
-
Whether damage existed before the storm
-
Whether roof replacement or repair is appropriate
-
How much the insurance company should pay
